Not too long ago, I shared with you cookies made following Tunde’s guidance, in which only two colors were used to make butterflies. At that time I mentioned she was going to propose a new challenge, using only one color, in flooding and piping consistency. These are my babies. They seem to have two colors, but it was due to operator error. I had to make more icing midway through, and particularly the thin icing used for the lace effect turned out too light. But they were all made using a lavender gel color from Enco, my favorite brand for natural color pigments.

These were not as hard as I expected them to be, although I did have some boo-boos here and there, and had to simplify two of the designs to preserve my mental sanity, or what is still left of it. Some of the steps are shown below, as usual I do not share details of a paid class, as it would be unfair to Tunde.

They are so intricate and delicate, I love the whole process. My main problem is keeping things symmetrical, I have difficulty with spacial orientation of drawings and it is pretty major. My brain works in odd ways for certain things. To give you an example: the traditional cartoon design of a cat’s mouth and nose – you know, the triangle for the nose, a straight line going down, and the mouth – require quite a bit of concentration, or the nose might end up flipped. So making the piping of both sides of the butterfly symmetrical takes a huge effort. I still love going through it, though.
These are my favorites of this adventure….

Huge thank you to Tunde, once again I was so happy to spend time pushing myself to decorate these babies…
