In real life, I am not fond of them, and that is putting it extremely mildly. We have way too many spiders around, too many humongous webs, and this season alone I faceplanted a spider web three times. Intense aerobic exercise followed, each time. Anyhow, I am quite fond of spiders as cookie subjects. And today, I share probably my all-time favorite, not only because Amber released a fantastic tutorial about it, but because she was inspired by a picture I sent her. How cool is that?

This cookie is a labor of love, I wasn’t sure I would be able to make it, as it involved hand-painting the web with a super fine brush. That technique frightens me and I tend to avoid any cookie that requires it. But I am so glad I took the challenge! It turned out better than I expected and it wasn’t as tricky as I anticipated. As you know, I don’t share specific details of paid classes, but below you see some of the steps to make this gorgeous cookie.

I ended up making three cookies, one large – pretty much like Amber demonstrated in her class – and two smaller ones. It was good to practice the technique for the background giving the illusion of light at the center, and of course to practice painting the web.

I am truly smitten by this design, and so grateful that Amber used my picture to work her magic. You can see her post about it here. And you can join her club following this link.

I wanted to have a full set of cookies with spiders as the common theme, so I went to work…
EYES IN THE DARK

Super simple, flood with black, add the eyes and pupils with wet-on-wet icing, let it set. Pipe the webs and the spiders.
HANIELA POP-ART SPIDERS AND THE PINK PUMPKIN

Haniela’s design is in my blog already, you can get the flashback version here. The pink pumpkin was made to go along with the pink theme and I am quite fond of them together…
COLORFUL WEBS

I used the same technique to pipe the spider body as both Amber and Haniela teach in their classes, this time using a very simple background with contrasting colors. All in all, super happy with this set of cookies…
