I tried my hand at a new technique, and as it’s always the case, first time is never very easy. But I learned quite a bit, and in the end was happy with the outcome. Here are my six little babies…

First things first, I added some Dusty Rose dye to fondant. I have not made my own, that is a project I intend to tackle but not quite ready for it. Then I rolled it thin, added the stencil on top, and very lightly brushed a product called “Baker’s Binder Stencil Activator” made by Colour Mill (available here). It was a bit messy at first, I think I added too much and the next step was not as smooth as I hoped. What was the next step? Brushing luster powder all over. The process is shown in the picture below.

It was a bit hard to judge how much activator to brush, how long to wait before brushing the luster powder, and how much powder to apply. But I think when I do it again it will be easier. Below, the look of our countertop once I was done with the six cookies…

Even with the first time struggles, I am glad I tried this technique, and look forward to my next time, maybe even making my own marshmallow fondant.

Ideally, the coverage should be smooth and homogeneous. In some parts of my cookies, that failed to happen. I think my problem was adding too much binder solution in some areas, so that the coverage became a bit sticky instead of fully dry. Just some details to consider for next time.

Sally – I would not call these supremely elegant ladies ‘babies’ but, I guess, you were their ‘Mama’ 🙂 ! Of course, the gold-backed butterfly is my favourite also . . . but the other butterfly is saying ‘hello’ also! Reading your words makes me smile . . . the scientist may say she is ‘retired’ . . . ha-ha . . . with love and hugs 🙂 !
