This was a very advanced project that had a few ups and downs in the process. As with everything in life, learning a new technique can be tricky. However, I am fascinated by lace work and intend to keep working with it. Here are the results of my labor of love…

First things first, let me give full credit to Tunde, and once again invite you to join her club or share it with someone (click here). The product used in these cookies is a special lace paste made by CBC Designs. They also sell lace mats that can be used with Sugarveil, another popular product to make edible lace. I bought the gold and white versions from CBC. The gold worked super well, but the white gave me trouble when using a very thin design. For thicker designs, both the gold and the white worked like a charm.

Back to Tunde’s cookies. They were designed around the lace paste and mats sold by CDC Designs. Some cookies got the golden lace over the naked, chocolate cookie, others used the lace glued over Royal icing and painted later. Some of the steps are shown below.

Once the laces are made (the day before), the fun process of icing and piping details can begin…

My very favorite part was painting, because it is so relaxing and you see the design come to life..

I am a bit frustrated by the inability to make the white paste work with the beautiful roses but here is what happened to me: the lace would pull out totally tangled instead of nice and ready to be flattened and used.

I ended up making several additional cookies using the lace paste with thicker mats and also the gold paste with additional mats I had around.

I want to explore a few possibilities now, including making my own edible lace from scratch. If I don’t lose what is left of my mental sanity in the process, you will hear about it…

Tunde, thanks again for always pushing me to try new things and expand my cookie decorating horizons…
