CROCHET COOKIES AND MEMORIES OF GRANDMA

My maternal Grandma was born in Portugal. She lost her Mom as a child, had a difficult upbringing not for lack of resources, but because her father put her in a boarding school where she was supposed to stay until she reached 18 years old. We know very little about those days, but one thing was certain: she never forgave her father for abandoning her. The very day she left the boarding school, she grabbed her things and jumped on a ship to Brazil. Never contacted her family again. Talk about feisty! She had a very strong personality. To be absolutely honest she wasn’t easy to interact with, but was outstanding at crochet. She would do the most amazing pieces while watching TV, did not have to pay close attention to the crochet needle, everything just flowed, no effort, no struggle, no flaws. I never had any interest in learning that skill. But, joining cookies with crochet? That is something I can give a try! Special thanks to Amber, the magician behind this cool technique.

This is another project that I felt very insecure about. Amber shared her tutorial on her Cookie Club (click here to join), and at first I told myself “no way!”. But next thing I know, I was cross-eyed over a chocolate cookie, having the time of my life! What makes the crochet look is the consistency of the icing, and of course, the pattern of piping. Amber made a series of perfect, absolutely perfect cookies, and demonstrated all the steps in every little detail. In theory, you can do that by looking at crochet pieces and creating it on a cookie, but I stayed with the pattern she taught. Maybe one day I will be brave enough to try a new one on my own…

It all starts by dividing the circular area in sections and then adding the pattern, bit by bit.

I made only two cookies, and must say another one could have been the end of yours truly. Very hard on the eyes and also on the hand. Amber is TRULY a magician. But I am so glad I went for it! I like to imagine that my Grandma would be pleased if she could see it…
