A little trivia for you… did you know that M&M stand for Mars and Murrie, the launchers of the colorful candy back in 1941? They worked for Mars and Hershey companies, respectively. Eighty-five years have passed, and we use M&Ms all the time in brownies, cupcakes, chocolate barks, and…. to decorate cookies!

You can find many examples around Pinterest and Instagram, I attempted three designs but had a majestic fail with a bumble bee, so you will only see two here today. First, bake cookies and decide where the candy will go. Make a little indentation with your finger in that very spot, and bake the cookies. I painted a band of gold before glueing the M&Ms.

Use a small amount of Royal icing to add the candy and they finalize the design with piping consistency icing and a very small hole in the piping bag (or use a PME 1.5 or 00 tip).

I love the cherries also, they require very little extra, just a bit of green for the stems and leaf.

You can use any cookie recipe, but I favor those without any leavening agent so that the little decorative holes and the indentation are preserved during baking. A chocolate dough will look nice with a brushing of gold or copper.

The ladybug and some stamped florals made a nice, simple cookie set…

It is a wonderful alternative to decorate cookies keeping them quite austere, no icing, no buttercream. Just a touch of chocolate candy.
