Succulents are so cool! It is quite amazing how many styles you can mimic using Royal icing. Recently I took an online class with Haniela, in fact, it was the second time making succulents live with her in real time. I must confess that I had some issues and was forced to take a step back. My icing was too soft, so I had to accept just watching most of it and then going back on my own, following the replay. First, of course, I had to adjust all the icing consistencies to the correct level. Best laid plans… can backfire. Once I had my pieces ready, I designed a few cookies to showcase them…

To make the hexagon base, I started with the edge, piping one section at a time. The “dirt” component was made by baking a couple of “sacrificial cookies” that were crumbled into small pieces and sprinkled over still wet icing.

I love the way the Royal icing transfers behave just like real little plants inside their little enclosure…

I also made some oval cookies with a piped cactus to complete a set with this kind of Southwest motif…

They started with a three color background of white and two tones of Dusty Rose pink. A little accent with gold using a fan brush, and the cactus piped in sections.

I really love the way this set turned out!
