THE MANY FACES OF THE FINE LINES

Nope, not talking aging and wrinkles. These are good fine lines, the ones any cookie decorator loves to see on their productions. I have been trying to practice them often, so today I share a small collection of designs in which they play a very important role, although some are “finer” than others…

CORAL HEARTS

Chocolate Cookies were flooded with Paprika color from Sugarflair, allowed to set, and then the fine lines piped with a tip-less icing bag, cut with scissors. A little PME luster pearl spray gave the final look, but that is of course optional.

PINK HEARTS

Same method, just different background color…

MODERN HEARTS

Black can also play nicely win fine lines, although they are a little trickier because if you make a mistake and try to fix it, it will show, as it quickly stains the icing underneath. So once the line falls where it does, leave it be.

BLACK AND WHITE

For that design I went with lines that were not super fine. Not so much for planning but I must admit that day the Gods of Royal Icing were not smiling on me, and I simply could not get them to work if I tried to go thinner. Still, the black background makes the lines pop up a lot and I think it is ok even with a less delicate piping.

ALTERNATING STRAIGHT LINES

So much you can do with this simple technique. Just pipe one line of each color and then alternate making one line at a time in the different sections. You can see a detailed tutorial here. It shows the method to alternate the lines, but I must tell you that 10 second consistency is too loose for me to master the fine lines, so keep that in mind. I like it a bit thicker.

You can also keep piping and adding lines until the whole cookie is covered, for a totally different outcome…

That’s all for now, friends! Fine lines are challenging but also a lot of fun to practice. And once you get the consistency just right (or very close to it), you get into a wonderful Zen-mode! I love it…
